I happen to be one of those rare (or so I’m told) ladies who absolutely loves The Three Stooges. I’ve had a crush on Curly since my folks projected 8mm prints of all the classics on a hung-up bed sheet in our basement, in lieu of getting us cable TV…I never missed Nickelodeon as long as I could watch Time Out For Rhythm whenever I wanted.
So this poster was inspired by my love of all things Stooges. The Joe Besser-lookin’ fella popping out of the manhole in his Jughead chapeau is giving a combo Redd Foxx “I’m comin, Elizabeth!” chest clutch and a Curly “nyaaah-nyahh-nyaaaaaaah” at the site of the beautiful lady… in my mind, anyhow. One person said it looked like he was a creepy sort of chap who went manhole-to-manhole pulling in foxy ladies, but not so! He’s merely giving her a steady hand so she doesn’t go stripes-deep in the sewer while she fixes her garter. Pinups can be like Rorschach tests, I guess… you say creepy, I say Curly!
